How a check-in actually works

What the rotating code is for, and why a photograph of it is useless.

The screen by the door shows a QR code that changes every thirty seconds. Somebody points their phone at it, the phone opens a page, they press one button.

Why the code rotates

A code that never changed could be photographed once and used from home forever. Each code is signed and carries the window it belongs to, so one from ten minutes ago is refused — not because we recognise the photograph, but because the code itself has expired.

Thirty seconds is short enough that a screenshot is worthless and long enough that somebody walking towards the door does not miss it. There is a grace period either side, so a slow tap on a slow connection is not punished.

One tap, not two

The button says Check in or Check out depending on what the person did last. Nobody has to remember which they are doing, and nobody can check in twice by accident: one code, one person, one record.

What is recorded

The time, the place, and the device. If the location has geofencing or an office network check switched on, the result of those checks is recorded too — whether they passed or not.

LiteEntry does not calculate hours worked. Reports show First In, Last Out and the day’s completed sessions added up as Duration — each check-in paired with the check-out that closed it. It records when somebody was seen, which is a different and much more defensible thing.
